Iwane Matsui: Iwane Matsui

Army General, Commanding Officer of Gunji in Central China, in addition, commander of expeditionary forces in Shanghai.

1878-1948
Graduated from Seijo School, Military Academy (second best in the 9th class), and Military Staff College (valedictorian in the 18th class). He served in the Russo-Japanese War during studying at Military Staff College. He stayed in China from his own request. He strongly felt sympathy for Sun Yat-senfs Pan-Asianism and supported his evolution. He cooperated in overthrowing Yuan Shikai of Chinese Nationalist Party. He also tried hard to establish Pan-Asia Association and Taiwanese-Asia Association. Once he was put into the reserve, he returned to the active service when the Second Sino-Japanese War occurred. He implemented the strict military laws at the Battle of Nanking in 1937, however, he was dishonored as a massacre at Tokyo Trial (International Military Tribunal for the Far East) later. He founded the Buddhist deity of mercy at Mt. Izu in the city of Atami. He then continued to live a reclusive life and every morning repeated the sutras of the Buddhist deity of mercy, mourning for the victims of the Second Sino-Japanese War until he was arrested as class-A war criminal.
